Miracles do exist

Ten years ago in munich some modelbuilder came together.
On of them Jürgen Mähse, learned goldsmith, a seeker and perfectionst.
His first stepp was the 156 Ferrari of the company Bosica. This allready was a great challenge. I had the pleasure to compare his model with the one of the most famous modelbuilder (Abb. Buch usw.)
Here you could see that his work is even in the smallest measuring unit correct. 1:43 is not 1:40 or 1:38. These mistakes do also happen to famous modelbuilder working on connections from Schlauchleitungen or Verschraubungen etc. You can check these messurments of Mr. Maehse they are allways 100%.
Hard welded space frame, suiting axels and gear box. The material silver and gold! Only these materials can be hard weldet and these small dimensions give the impression of the original material.(steel an aluminium). The underconstruction is casted and than accordently routed and worked by. It is not worked by electrical discharge machining or other „Schicki Micki“. At the end the underconstruction looks like the original coming out of the locksmithery.
I had the first fotos in my hand and the first question to the builder: How about recontstruction?
The answer :I can make 5 pieces.
We need new tasks! Maybe the W 196 with his complete technic or a racing car from another producer. It came out in the first conversation that the model would be delivered as it is shown here.
The idea, was the moment of marriage. A complete chassis and the body.
Many builder and collecter are not aware of this very special moment bringing chassis and body together. All the details are coppied what you also see at the original. The welding at the frame are invisible, which means that everthing is worked out perfectly. Till today I have never seen a similar modell in these details. This project opens new doors
After Vincenzo Bosica the first time after twenty years milestone in modelbuilding in 1:43 was done.
A personel note: Concerning the value also here a new door is opend. But more later.
Some days ago I met Jürgen Maehse and had the model for he first time in my hand. You can really touch it. Nothing glued can fall apart, nothing can bend! Your can really touche the frame everywhere. A new expierence.
With this project Jürgen Maehse wanted to create dignified memorial to the craftmen of mercedes.
At our meeting he exposed under the use of the lecture the developelment of the first 300SL cars.
How many effort and power was needed for the construction of such a car and how tricky the mechanics were working!
With the existing fotos and desings the model was finally created. To really bring out this marvel he decided not to finish the model. It should show the moment shortly before the final fitting.
No bottom plate or other interior devirts from the essencial model only like this you are able to recognize all the details.
Some facts to the model:
The spaceframe ist hard welded, the original was bonded. The original pipes are 20 mm and 25mm , the modelpipes are 0,47mm an 0,58mm.
The suspension is fully functional. The wheels are not turning, we have are technic reduction at not a toy. The weehls can be striped an than you can see the brake drums. Steereing an suspension are aviable. You can even see the wriststraps at the rearaxle. Shockabsorber and springs corresponde with the original.
Unfortunatuly no steering gear coud be rebuild. With the messuring unit 1:43 it was not practicable. Messuring unit comes before function!
Who still is searching will also find a movable steering damper. The rearaxle is like the original a fully funktional double-joint pendulum axle with low pivot point. Gearbox, cooler, tanks and a wooden steeringwheel are avialable. Radiator grill and mercedes embleme are not flat corroded but manufactured with silver according the original.
The wires wich build the frame after bonding are made out of white gold.
You might hear an outcry under the normal modelbuilder „he is a goldsmith“ he can do that but it is unfair.
Bull****h everybody has the freedom to work with the material he wants. From my experience I can say that only a few goldsmiths are able to make weldings of this kind. Why should he not do it? With according loups you recognise that the joints are absolutely clean and perfect.
Some sentences to the carbody: It is casted in silver. The engine bonnet is like the original fixed on frame joints, and opend held by slats. The doors are similar as the engine bonnet frame coints welded. The sissor-mechanic functions as the original. They are made of hard metall.
„They should open also after 50 times“
Some words about the frame:
Your might question yourself how the motor fits?
Concerning the front axle I had associations with some WCT models from Tameo.
Most of his models are corroded and always glued.
In my model every detail was velded and has therefore high mechanical load capacity.
The cooler has the according adapters, even the electric generator has a fan belt.
In the following conversation Jürgen Maehse told me that he has some small problems with the design and the fitting of the exhaust pipe. These were masterly solved as you can see on the pictures. Even the clip of the attachment of the exhaust silencer are visible. During the last days the car body has been worked over and corresponds now with the original.
Coming now to the last point:
An imense amount of hours were invested in this model. Comparing the contructions of a Bosica, Make Up or Tameo WCT-model, Mr. Maehse needed for his model the eights to tenths times more. With his words the costs for the material is not worth too be mentioned.
The cost for such a model only for work and material almost reach the 10.000 € area. A new door will be opend
Regarding a high segment watch you have 30% production costs here you have 100%. In relation to the estimated value. So you can get an idea of the value of such a work of art.
Looking foreward to Santa Claus, heritage or a win in a lottery.

That's freaking awesome!!! I love your style!!! I'm curious what process was used to cast the body parts... Lost wax??? Those thin crisp castings are beautifully. I thought it might be electroformed before reading your text.

Just when you think you have seen it all, wow, speechless. Thank you for sharing this mind-boggling work of art. Did I understand you to say that 5 complete models will be realized? And final cost will be over 10,000euro? Just curious. I am sure others are as well. They might start putting their real cars up for sale to get one of these. :-)

the job:
mount an engine in a le phoenix street 300sl!

This isn't really included. The bonnet will be opened, not juergens job.
Aktually the engine (W194 - '52) exists. For the first he must build a new injection and cooler.
The startingposition: after short look and measuring:
he must build a new frontsection, incl. engine mount. Fortunately the basic is a 'little' big-ger#61514;! So juergens engine fits easily.
The measurements:
L original 4465 = 103,83 / le ph 110,00
B 1790 = 41,62 / 45,18
WB 2400 = 55,81 / 56,74
At a weight of 120gr. Without saying, a filigree suspension switches itself of. So he must build 2 wheelhouses and fixed them strong. On both sides he solder hinges for the axle. The model coldn't sink after assembly. The injectionpipes are filed conic and with the heatprotec-tionplates fixed at the pitot tube. Some parts of the engine periphery will fit later

Here you can see the airfilter, watercooler etc. now, juergen must produce pipes, oiltanke and the cables.

one of the problems:

at the original car, engine and transmission are one by one installed.
all is a little tricky.
look at the fanbelt, he is, like the original a little shorter and after soldering, he 'jumps' into the drivingwheels.

At the pictures you see how juergen makes the ignition cables and the cable chute.
The original is 5,16mm. when the mathmatics are correct he must produce 0,12mm. hoops that he can't get #61516;. The thinnest he can produce: 0,26mm. Without digital photography, the eye couldn't detect this mistake. A cable by 0,12mm is correct but nearly invisible.

now the work is finished. juergen has completed the engine and fixed the colored unit at his place. like the original, there is no place at all. the mounting in the model, is the 'problem' of another modelbuilder.

Not that big a fan of the 300SL, but your model is amazing. Pre modern era Mercedes Benz engines look like they came out of a truck.

the engine results from the MB 300 (adenauer car) and there was a lot more place under the bonnet. so, a problem at the 300 SL was the height of the engine. this is one of the first engines what was tiltesd installed.

tje bonnet of the model will opened by another modelbuilder. it would be a difficult job. the model is VERY heavy!
